Lab Resources

Lab-Based Analyses
Petrographic microscopes (both table top and portable) for thin-section analyses of archaeological materials; Bartington MS2B table-top magnetic susceptibility; colorimeter for the analysis of soil phosphates; access to shared portable x-ray fluorescence set-up; desktop computers and laptops equipped with specialized software for data processing and quantitative analysis

Geophysical and Survey Equipment
Emlid Reach RS2 RTK-GNSS GPS system; Bartington Grad601 dual sensor magnetic gradiometer; GSSI SIR-4000 ground penetrating radar; Both gradiometer and ground penetrating radar can be equipped with Emlid GPS system; a range of specialized mapping and data processing software

Fieldwork
The SAHND and SHEL Lab is fully equipped to undertake any stage of archaeological fieldwork, survey, and excavations.

Zooarchaeology
The SHEL Lab maintains a currently and rapidly expanding vertebrate and invertebrate osteological comparative collection focused on Eastern North America for students and researchers to effectively undertake a range of zooarchaeological projects.

AMS Dating
The SAHND and SHEL Lab maintains a healthy partnership with the Institutes of Energy and the Environment’s Radiocarbon Lab. This relationship provides a unique opportunity for students and researchers to effectively and affordably undertake a range of radiocarbon dating and chronological modeling projects.

Stable Isotope Prep
MicroMill, Table Top Manual Milling Machine, Buehler IsoMet Low Speed (SQ-120205), Sectioning Band Saw, Microbalances, Dremels, all necessary materials and capacity for sectioning, thin and thick, and mounting of many types of samples. The lab carries the capacity to support a range of stable isotope sampling and preparation for a variety of archaeological and environmental research projects.
